In The Game - Memphis vs Orlando 1.31.2011 (Mike Conley 26 points, 11 assists!!)

(1.31.2011 - Mike Conley lays it up between Dwight Howard & Gilbert Arenas - first career 20/10 game)

1.31.2011 - Memphis Grizzlies 100 vs Orlando Magic 97 (NBA Regular Season)
- Mike Conley Jr. - 26 points, 11 assists, 2 steals!!

In The Game - As Basketball fans, the amount of talent on a NBA court on any given night is ridiculous! Former high school phenoms, college & international stars..this (exclusive) league has so many great players. We watch so many games with our former Bucks, so it is easy to sometimes take the talent of these guys for granted. But every once in a while we stop & think about how these players are the best of the best. In the Game is a series of videos where we feature some of the players of both teams, in addition to the former Buckeye.

Indy's Mike Conley Jr. has had several great games this season, and he delivered another standout performance on January 31st vs the Orlando Magic. The former Buckeye scored 26 points & dished 11 assists, registering his first NBA 20/10 game. Conley hit four threes , and also got a key steal late in the game to seal the victory.

FIBA - Chevakata is one of 4 teams vying for a Eurocup Championsihp

(#50 - Jessica Davenport scored 29 points on 2.10.2011 vs Nantes to help Chevakata advance to the EuroCup Semi - Finals)

2.3.2011 - Chevakata (Russia) 70 at Nantes (France) 83 (FIBA Eurocup Final Eight Game 1)
- Jessica Davenport: 17 points, 8 rebounds

2.10.2011 - Chevakata (Russia) 92 vs Nantes (France) 72 (FIBA Eurocup Final Eight Game 2)
- Jessica Davenport: 29 points, 10 rebounds!!

2.24.2010 - Chevakata (Russia) 66 at Arras (France) 67 (FIBA Eurocup Semis Game 1)
- Jessica Davenport: 16 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks

Catching up with Chevakata
- Buckeye Jessica Davenport & her current squad Chevakata (of Russia) have had a great run in the Eurocup tournament, and are now one of 4 teams vying for the title. . The Eurocup is a high level European competition with several clubs from various countries.

Conquering Nantes - Chevakata marched through the tournament with little resistance until the quarterfinals matchup with Nantes. The club from the French League pulled the home upset on Chevakata by a score of 83-70 in leg one of the two game series.

A FIBA two game home/away series is decided on the accumulative score of both games. So having lost by 13 in game one, Chevakata needed to beat Nantes by 14 points or more in the return matchup in Russia. 14 points..that seems like a tall order right? Well not for Jessica Davenport because she dropped 29 big points, and grabbed 10 rebounds in a glorious 92-72 twenty point victory..helping her squad advance to the Eurocup final four!

The Next Challenge (Semi - Finals) Chevakata is currently matched up with yet another French team in the Semis, Arras. Arras has a talented roster that features Leilani Mitchell & Pauline Akonga. It looked like Davenport & Chevakata were on their way to a big victory in game one, but Arras erased an eleven point deficit & ended up winning by one point (67-66)

3.3.2011 - Chevakata (Russia) vs Arras (France) Eurocup Semi - Finals Game Two!

Chevakata enters game two of the Semis with the Eurocup Finals at arms reach! The game one loss in France was disappointing of course, but they were only defeated by one point! All they have to do is beat Arras at home by 2 points, and they are in the finals. The game is on Thursday March 3rd, good luck Chevakata..four solid quarters!

Update - 2010 Rookie Class Part One (Andrea Walker & Cherise Daniel)

(#12 Andrea Walker - Sepsi B.C - Romania 2011)

As we always say, it is amazing how the game of basketball can open up so many avenues for an individual. These opportunities can include media exposure, networking, world travel ect..

One of the most crucial aspects of being a Rookie is getting used to the nuances of the pro game as a business and lifestyle...the travel, contract situations, nutrition, language barriers, cultural differences & being away from home etc...All that stuff is very important, because when it comes to the former Buckeyes, once they get comfortable as pros, it is a wrap for the on court competition.

In February of 2010, former Ohio State teammates Cherise Daniel & Andrea Walker were in the stretch run of their senior seasons (a Big 10 title btw!) A year later, both are currently experiencing international hoops for the first time.

Andrea Walker
competed in the Spanish LF2 in 2010 before joining Sepsi B.C of Romania (January 2011). In two months of play, the Pittsburgh native has proven to be one of the best inside players in Romania's top division (currently rated the 2nd best rebounder & shot-blocker in league stats) Walker had an incredible 3 game stretch of double-doubles from Jan. 29 (15 & 23 rebounds!) to Feb. 2. (17 & 14), and then on Feb. 9 (16 & 21!) - (Walker Stats) Her last big game for Sepsi was on Feb. 25, a 22 point & 18 rebound performance in a 78-39 blowout W over Craiova! Sepsi B.C heads into the last month of regular season play as the 3rd team in league standings.

Cherise Daniel is one of four former Buckeyes who are currently playing professionally in Germany. The guard out of Columbus, Ohio joined a club called TSV Quakenbruck of the DBBL 2. in January of 2011.

Quakenbruck is one of the better squads in the
DDBL 2. North Division. Early game reports noted that TSV wanted to slowly integrate Daniel (pictured left: 2.27.2011) into the team. The local media reported that she would be a good fit after progressing nicely form game to game (with minimal minutes - Articles: one, two)

-
2.27.2011 - QTVS Quakenbruck Dragons 70 vs Osnabrucker Panthers 68 (Derby Match)
-
Cherise Michelle Daniel: 22 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, GW steal & layup!

Cherise shocks top ranked Osnabrucker! -

On February 27 TSV Quakenbruck played rivals & top ranked Osnabrucker in a home Derby matchup in Artland Arena. The top story of the game was Cherise Daniel's explosive 22 point performance in just 22 minutes of play. The versatile guard hurt Osnabrucker from every where on the court, including three 3-point makes form long range. With time expiring, and the scored tied at 68, Cherise capped off her rookie breakout game with the game winning steal & layup!

Country - Germany
League - Beko BBL (Bundesliga)

2.192011 - MBC 77 vs Ludwigsburg 81 (Germany League)
- Velimir Radinovic: 12 points, 2 rebounds

Matt Terwilliger & Phoenix Hagen will attempt to claim their third victory in the month vs Ludwigsburg (12-11) on the road Sunday February 27. Hagen is coming off a nice 87-78 win over Bonn on the 19th. (12-10) W win in Ludwigsburg would be huge before next week's home date with Bayreuth (5-17)

Another Buckeye, Velimir Radinovic (pictured left), and the MBC Wolves are still searching for win number one in February. The team (6-17) out of Weissenfels, Germany dropped their last three games by a combined total of just seven points. They hope to get that elusive victory on the 27th vs Bayreuth. Radinovic is averaging 10 points & 5 rebounds in 23 mpg in his last 5 games.

(Video from Hagen's home victory over Bremerhaven on February 5. It's a look into what it is like to be at a Germany League basketball game. Terwilliger (waring #42) knocks down a free throw at 2:52 mark (looks like he hit a big transition bucket at yhe 4:30 mark, but he camera man misses it), and then gets a big rebound & basket at the 5:02 mark, listen to the crowd erupt!)

Poland - G. Reese...Always Money for Koszalin

(Poland - #9 George Reese - AZS Koszalin)

Buckeye - George Reese (11th year pro)
Country - Poland (Polska Basketball Liga)
Team - AZS Koszalin (7-9 - currently #8 in standings)

1.2.2011 - AZS Koszalin 83 Trefl Sopot 81 (PLK Regular Season)
- George Reese: 23 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal

1.20.2011 - AZS Koszalin 104 at Energa Czarni 92 (PLK Regular Season)
- George Reese: 25 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds!!

2.5.2011 - AZS Koszalin 85 PGE Turow 78 (PLK Regular Season)
- George Reese: 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals

2.20.2011 - AZS Koszalin 93 vs Asseco Prokom 83 (PLK Regular Season)
- George Reese: 13 points, 4 steals, 2 rebounds

The Rock of Koszalin - (We are now 3/4s through the Polish PLK season, and what do ya know..Buckeye veteran George Reese is playing like one of the league's best players.)

The 2011 Polish League All-Star game took place in mid-January. It might have been George Reese's 3rd consecutive All-Star appearance if not for a bit of a delayed season debut. As you may recall, Reese re-joined Koszalin in late October (missing the preparation stage & the first three games) It took a couple weeks for him to get back into high level form, but his play from early December on has been nothing short of outstanding!

Reese, who is currently ranked as the fourth best scorer in Poland, is averaging 20 points & 7 rebounds in his last nine games. Number 9 has hit double figure scoring marks in 10 of 13 played games so far...5 of those games have been 23 points or more including a season high 29 point performance on December 11..in other words..he gets buckets! (G. Reese Stats)

AZS Gets Back in the League Mix - We knew G-Money would come back with another strong season, but Koszalin's turnaround has been sweet as well. A disappointing 1-6 start had Koszalin at the bottom of league standings before a five game winning streak got them right back in the mix. It was a six point victory over Zastal on December 11 that AZS would snowball into a great stretch of victories which included wins over top 5 squads Sopot & Czarni. With just six games left in the regular season (remember just one game a week), and the toughest stretches of the schedule behind them, AZS sits in decent position to make a run for a playoff seed.

(Video - AZS KoszalinTV - Top 10 plays from Koszalin's victory over Turow on February 5. Check out Reese's big block at #2!)

WNBA - The Indiana Fever Re-signed Jessica Davenport!!

Early February 2011 was home to big news when the WNBA's Indiana Fever announced the re-signing of Columbus, Ohio's Jessica Davenport. (according to the Fever, a multi-year deal)

From the Fever Website -
"The No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft and a three-time All-American from Ohio State, Davenport averaged 7.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and nearly a block a game during the 2010 WNBA season, despite just

over 14 minutes per game off the bench. The 6-5 center has steadily increased her playing time behind All-Star Tammy Sutton-Brown and carved a niche in the Fever lineup. She initially signed with Indiana at the beginning of the 2009 campaign and become a valuable contributor during the Fever’s run to the WNBA Finals"
Davenport (pictures left with Fever teammate Jessica Moore) is well experienced & traveled in five years of professional basketball. She has played in France & China internationally (WNBA off-seasons) , and is currently in Russia for the 2010/11 international stretch (the stints in France & Russia also include Eurocup runs where Jessica is traveling to other countries to play teams from different national leagues. Her Russian team is currently playing in the 2011 Eurocup Final four) .

Back home in the States (WNBA), her career has been on a steady upward trend, especially after touching down in Indianapolis where she has participated in two playoff runs with the Indiana Fever (including a finals appearance). Davenport made a lot of noise in the 2009 WNBA Finals, last season she backed it up with consistent high level play, and now she is currently playing like one of the top centers in all of Women's basketball (currently the 3rd best scorer in Russia, one of the top Women's leagues in Europe) Congrats Jess!

Flashback - Rare Rookie Clips of Terence Dials at the 2006 French All-Star Game!

(Terence Dials - LNB All-Star Game in Paris, France - 12/29/2006)

(Flashback Game)
Reports out of France in early February named Terence Dials as one of multiple players on the wish list of Entente Orleans. The French League club was looking to find a replacement for one of their post players, Zach Moss. Dials (currently hooping in Cyprus) is well known in the French basketball community after playing three of his five professional years in France's LNB. Dials played for Orleans in his rookie season (2006/2007), moved to Orthez in 2007/2008, and then returned to Orleans in his third pro season.

T.D. helped Orleans advance all he way to the French League Championship in 2009. In late 2006 (rookie season), Dials capped off a year that included a Big Ten Title and a Big Ten MVP award with a French League All-Star Selection (pictured left at the All-Star Game).

LNB All-Star 2006 - Fresh off a great Senior season at Ohio State, Terence Dials is honored as one of France's best at the 2006 French League All-Star Game in Paris, France. This game pitted a team of imports versus a squad of French Nationals. Some familiar names in this game include Frenchmen Ali Traore, Yannick Bokolo, and Americans Dewarick Spencer, Cedric Banks, and Columbus, Ohio's Kenny Gregory)

(BuckeyeBallersTV - Not the best quality, but this is rare footage of Dials in his rookie season.)

Play descriptions
  • Dials hits a mid-range jumper
  • T.D. seals his man in the post for the pass, pumpfakes another defender for a bucket
  • Layup and the foul

NBA - D. Cook Is Back

(Jeff Green, Daequan Cook, Kevin Durant)

1.28.2011 - Oklahoma City Thunder 103 vs Miami Heat 108
- Daequan Cook 13 points, 4 rebounds
2.15.2011 - Oklahoma City Thunder 126 at Sacramento Kings 96
- Daequan Cook 20 points, 5 rebounds!

A professional can be defined as a skilled practitioner or an expert in his or her field, mentally & physically. So much of being a pro in basketball or any sport is being ready to perform at all times.

Four year pro Daequan Cook is starting to perform for a very good Oklahoma City Thunder Team. The guard from Dayton probably wishes some of his recent shooting games would have came earlier in the season calendar, but his recent contributions reveals how unwavering confidence can carry a player through, despite not playing.

The best description for Daequan's early season play is just an honest shooter's slump. OKC had him in their plans as he played in the first seven games (67 mins), but making only three 3-pointers out of 16 attempts in that time span is obviously way short of what Cook is capable of (Cook Stats). The November 12 contest vs Portland was Daequan's last game action of 2010. He would then endure a long stretch of DNPs which can be attributed to his slump, but also the depth of Oklahoma City. When you have James Harden, a budding star at SG, and Thabo Sefolosha (one of the best defenders in the West), distributing minutes is not very hard especially if Cook is not hitting.

Yet, to number #14's credit..he remained confident, kept putting in work & waited for his next opportunity to contribute.

Back In Style - Daequan Cook found his way back into into the OKC rotation due to a mid-January injury to Sefolosha. He wasn't about to let this opportunity slip after not playing for some time. In his second game back, the former Buckeye hit three trey balls in a double overtime victory over the Washington Wizards (1.28.2011).

Sports has a way of making great story-lines, and it was funny how Cook was able to find a little rhythm vs Washington just in time for the nationally televised clash with his former squad, the Miami Heat (1.30.2011). This is what it is all about, overcoming adversity & contributing to the team. And by his performance in that marquee game vs Miami, you would have never known that Cook was out for an extended period time. He scored 10 big points off the bench in the first half, finishing with 13 points & 4 rebounds.

(Video - Cook highlights vs Miami! The swag was on full display here..he knocked down his first three, hit Eddie House with a nice pump fake before a mid range J, and also got a run-out dunk. His final corner three in the fourth quarter was sweet..his stare down at the Miami Heat bench was priceless!)

Cook Heats up before All-Star break: Daequan had his best game of the season in a 30 point rout of Sacramento on February 15. #14 blazed the Kings for 20 points behind five 3-pointers. The game was another reminder of Cook's capability to help Oklahoma City in the second half of the season.

Kosta Koufos Makes his case for the Dunk Contest

(Kosta Koufos takes a shot vs the next slam dunk champion, Blake Griffin - 12.20.2010 Getty Images - Minnesota at L.A)

The 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend is right around the corner, and everyone is talking about Blake Griffin's participation in the Slam Dunk contest. In a recent video interview quirky reporter Elie Seckbach asked Kosta Koufos if he would rather take part in the slam dunk competition or the 3 point shoot out. The 3rd year pro opted for the dunk contest , citing his creativity as a good dunker.

We've seen some nice in game dunks from Kosta, but as he noted..a dunk contest calls for variation. So after a Timberwolves' practice, Koufos made his case with some videos displaying his dunking talents.

(Video - Interview - In addition to playful dunk talk, Koufos also discusses adjusting to a mask after catching a bow in practice, and what it means to play for the Greek National Team)

- Mike Conley Jr. 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal (37 mins)
- Evan Turner 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal (20 mins)

BuckeyeBallersTV - Mike Conley's Memphis Grizzlies met up with Evan Turner & the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season on January 28, 2011. It looked like Sixers were on their way to a fourth consecutive victory when they stormed out to a 21 point lead in third quarter. But their smooth play went form poised to sloppy in the last period. Eleven turnovers helped Memphis score 42 fourth quarter points en route to edging Philly 99-94.

(Video - Mike Conley played his usual starter's minutes at 37:46, Evan Turner played back rotation minutes at 20:13. ET did most of his damage in the first half including a nice layup in transition, and a assist to Elton Brand. Conley had a couple nice drives in the 2nd half as Memphis made their comeback. We thought Turner should have played more of course lol)

Italy - Scoonie Penn & Jarrius Jackson Form One of the Top Backcourts in the LegaDue

(Prima Veroli is currently undefeated in 2011)

1.16.2011 - Prima Veroli 87 at Umana Reyer 86 OT (Lega Due) W
-Jarrius Jackson: 35 points, 4 steals
-Scoonie Penn: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists

One of the biggest early year stories of 2011 in the Italian Lega Due has been the rise of Societa Veroli Basket (aka Prima Veroli). The club based out of Veroli, Italy is currently on a five game winning streak, and have won seven of their last eight contests dating back to December 2010. Veroli's 10-8 record (after a 5-10 start) has them ranked 7th in the LegaDue, and they are now poised to make a bigger move in the standings with home games in 3of the next four games. (Schedule)

Prime Veroli has been able to see recent success behind the superb play of guards Jarrius Jackson (pictured left) and Buckeye legend Scoonie Penn. Jackson, a former Texas Tech star, is one of the most explosive scorers in Italy's 2nd division. His 20 points per game is the third best in the statistical league standings. JJ scores from everywhere, he can take anyone off the dribble, hits mid-range Js, pull up threes, will finish in transition, and also will post up opposing guards on occasion well.

Moreover, Jackson's American back-court teammate, Scoonie Penn (pictured left), is that savvy, veteran lead guard who provides leadership and stability. Scoonie will constantly communicate, make the extra pass for an easy shot, and judiciously pick his spots to score buckets when needed. (and he's capable, scored 15 or more points in 8 out of 12 game so far)Penn & Jackson together form one versatile tandem for Veroli's opponents.

(Video) Victory in Venice: Prima captured perhaps their biggest win of the season in mid-January 2011 when they took down league leading Umana Reyer on the road in overtime. Jarrius Jackson was magnificent in Venice, he scored 35 points & completely took the game over in overtime. Scoonie Penn scored 17 points along with 6 rebounds & 4 assists..his buckets included three huge three point makes.
