NBA - Charlotte Hornets Add Dallas Lauderdale to Fall Training Camp Roster !

(Image - Dallas Lauderdale in his #50 Idaho Stampede Jersey)

NBA Opportunity - Great news came out of Charlotte, North Carolina in late September 2014 when the Hornets club announced the addition of Buckeye big man Dallas Lauderdale to their fall training camp roster in preparation for the 2014/2015 NBA Season.

This camp will be Lauderdale second official pre-season training with an NBA team after playing as a member of the Portland Trailblazers in the fall of 2012.With Portland, Dallas participated in brief action in two NBA Pre-Seasong games before missing the final roster prior to the 2012/2013 regular season. Lauderdale stayed connected to the Trailblazers organization by joining their NBA D-League affiliate team, the Idaho Stampede (late Oct. 2012), but an in injury later that fall would keep him sidelined for the reminder of that calendar basketball season.

Dallas Lauderdale officially returned to the court with the Blazers at the 2013 Las Vegas NBA Summer League competition, and then he re-joined the Idaho Stampede for NBDL 2013/2014 season. Lauderdale is now entering his fourth year of professional basketball since graduating from The Ohio State University.

U.S. NBA Prep - After playing his rookie season in Poland, Lauderdale has opted to continue his path to the NBA in the States by accepting multiple training camp invites, team workouts, summer league invitations, and participating in a full NBA Developmental League Season. In the 2013/2014 NBDL season, he started 38 out 39 games played for the Idaho Stampede with averages of 8 ppg, 9 rpg, and 3 blocks per game.

Much has been written about the plus and minues of playing in the NBA Development League versus an overseas opportunity. One benefit of going the domestic route is being able to perform directly in front of NBA management. That stateside visibility has resulted in another NBA training camp opportunity for the former Buckeye.

The Hornets - Pro Basketball Talk on NBA Pro Sports has a good breakdown of the current Charlotte Hornets roster situation (link). The roster stands has 17 players, and according to the report big Dallas may have a legitimate opportunity to battle for a potential roster spot.Charlotte signed Lauderdale to a non guaranteed  contract using the team min.

Good luck to Dallas Lauderdale in his quest to make it in the National Basketball Association!

NBA - Evan Turner's Top Plays of 2013/2014 Season

(Image - Evan Turner & the Sixers celebrate following Turner's Game Winning Buckeye against the Celtics - Boston, Massachusetts - 1.29.2014)

Turner's Top Plays - Time is certainly flying, it does not seem like that long ago that Evan Turner was breaking the hearts of Michigan fans with an improbable buzzer beater in the Big Ten Tournament of his Junior year in NCAA Basketball. But the former Ohio State Buckeye has already completed four professional basketball seasons in the National Basketball Association.

The 2013/2014 Season was the most eventful pro stint for Turner. He played 54 games with Philadelphia (averaging 17ppg) before a February trade that sent him to the Indiana Pacers, a playoff contender that would later be embroiled in controversy & disappointment in the last part of the regular season and playoffs.

Lost in all the trade talk in Philly and the discussion of how Turner would fit in with the Pacers is that Evan had some big time moments last season..most notably in the clutch in his final season in a 76ers Jersey with two game winner games (vs Brooklyn & Boston) and a memorable opening night dunk against a contending Lebron James. We included those 3 plays in our favorite  top 5 Turner plays for the 2013/2014 season..along with a 360 Dunk in Los Angeles and a clutch spin move and lay up on Mario Chalmers to help the Pacers defeat the Miami Heat in a heated regular season contest.

#5. - 12.29.2013 - Los Angeles, California - In a video titled 'controversial dunk' - Turner performs a 360 dunk in the waning seconds of a victory versus the Lakers. Perhaps not the most classy thing to do..Evan seems contrite afterwards..but basketball ethics/etiquette or not, how about the sick dunk! LOL

#4. - 10.30.2013 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Opening night the NBA Season versus the defending Champion Miami Heat. It is early in the game and Turner finds himself with the ball in transition with League MVP Lebron James defending. Lebron went up with one hand, and Evan went up with two hands around the ball...the result? An epic career poster dunk for Evan Turner. We admit, it didn't seem like Bron was in full block mode on this play, but he did make a swipe/block attempt at the ball and Turner did beat his defense for the dunk so James is definitely in this poster. Evan can say he dunked on Lebron. (No, not a beastly dunk on where there is contact like a Carter on Mourning, but this play still qualifies)

#3. - 3.26.2014 - Indianapolis, Indiana - Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers..a late regular season game with a playoff type of atmosphere and play. This was one intense, chippy, and physical game. With starting SG Lance Stephenson ejected, Turner came up with two critical buckets in the 4th quarter, one coming at the 1:35 mark with the Pacers down 80-79. Turner received a perimeter pass from George Hill, he then put Miami Heat guard Mario Chalmers in the spin cycle with a brilliant right to left spin move en-route to the easy layup. This game showed that Turner could play big for the Pacers when it counted..but for whatever reason it seemed as if he just did not fit in with Indiana as well as he could have (He could have been a much bigger help if he had spent more than two months with Indy..but the Pacers had a multitude of problems heading into the Playoffs)

#2. - 1.29.2014 - Boston, Massachusetts - Game winner #1 - Last possession of the game, Evan Turner crosses over Jerryd Bayless and pulls up over fellow Buckeye Jared Sullinger for the game winning shot!

#1. - 12.20.2013 - Philadelphia, Pennslyvania - Brooklyn 120 Philly 119 in Overtime. Turner gets the ball with 3.9 seconds remaining. He uses a Spencer Hawes dribble hand off slash ball screen to lose man defender Shaun Livingston..a quick hesitation allows him to dash past center Brook Lopez, and the play and game finally ends with Turner shooting the game winning shot over Paul Pierce who attempts to draw a charge by sliding over

FIBA - Jantel Lavender Helps lead USA Over China in World Cup Exhibition

(Getty Images - 9.20.2014 - Team USA Post Jantel Lavender rises for a shot attempt against China in preparation for the 2014 FIBA World Cup - Paris, France)

Top Form - Buckeye Jantel Lavender is currently continuing her outstanding year of basketball as a member of the United States' Senior Women's Basketball team in preparation for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Turkey. Lavender helped lead Team USA to a victory in their 3rd preparation game with 14 points ( a perfect 7 for 7 shooting from the field) against China on 9.20.14. USA won by a comfortable score of 99-75 after a close game (72-66) versus Australia on 9/19.

Hoops All Year - There has been no such thing as a basketball off-season for the 25 year old Cleveland native. Jantel Lavender began the year 2014 playing overseas with Euroleague team Wisla Can Pack of Poland. In April, Lavender won her first career professional League Championship (Poland) with Wisla in the Polish League (she also participated in the 2014 Euroleague Women Playoffs with Wisla).

Upon returning to the States (May), Jantel immediately re-joined the Los Angeles Sparks for preseason of the 2014 WNBA Season (with the Sparks, Lavender ironically played China in a pre-season game on  May 10). Playing Center for L.A., Lavender started 27 of 34 games played in her 4th WNBA Season with averages of 12 ppg & 6 rebounds a game..her best statistical season as a pro. After completing the WNBA season (fell in the quarterfinals of the playoffs) in September, Jantel joined USA for training camp in prep for the FIBA tournament.

Making The Worlds - Jantel Lavender is currently in an interesting & tough competition to make the 12 player Team USA Roster for the 2014 World Cup. Training Camp opened in the United States with a 24 player pool on September 14.  The roster is now down to 15 players as the team competes in an exhibition tournament in France that runs until September 23.

Lavender (pictured left: post practice with Candace Dupree) has a good shot to make the World Cup final roster due to performance & circumstance. Jantel has reportedly performed well in training camp, in a televised intra-squad scrimmage, and in the recent preparation game with China...some believe she has earned a spot on the team. Another key aspect shaping the roster is the absence of elite post players. (article) Candace Parker (Forward), Sylvia Fowles (Center) are slated to not participate in the World Cup, and Center Britney Griner is questionable. If Griner is not able to play for USA, Lavender's inclusion would seem to be a no-brainer so to speak, as she would make for a good back up center to Tina Charles who will most likely start. However, Jantel's chances to make the roster could diminish should Griner eventually join the team overseas.

Good luck to Jantel Lavender..and why not Lavender? She is currently in the prime of her career and playing some of her best basketball. She won 3 Gold Medals by representing USA in various youth competitions (U19, U17, WUG) and has twice trained with the Senior Women's team as a member of the Select Team (2010,2013). She is ready to officially dawn the red, white , and blue at the 2014 FIBA World Cup!

Video - Othello Hunter (2012 Azovmash Clips + Recap)

(Image - #21 Othello Hunter, #7 Oleksiy Pecherov & Azovmash post game - Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine - April 2012)

Hunter's World Tour - Former Buckeye Forward Othello Hunter participated in two different national basketball leagues in the 2011/2012 season. Following a successful All-Star stint with Dinamo Sassari in the famed Italian Serie A (2010, 2011), Hunter joined Alan Anderson to form a potent import duo for Shandong in the Chinese Basketball Association. He would complete the regular season with Shandong in February 2012, totaling 31 games at 18ppg & 8rpg (missed the playoffs in China). In the latter part of February, Ukrainian Club BC Azovmash announced the signing of Othello Hunter to finish out the regular season & 2012 playoffs. BC Azovmash actually included Hunter's Italy Dunk Mix from BuckeyeBallersTV in their website's official news release! Click on this link !

Enter Azovmash - Club BC Azovmash is based in the city of Mariupol in Ukraine. They are a yearly contender in the Ukrainian Super League and also compete in the VTB United League. Othello played with some notable & familiar names on Azovmash like Guard Daniel Ewing (Duke), Swingman Matt Walsh (Florida), & Ukrainian star Oleksiy Pecherov.

Azovmash finished the regular season with a 26-13 record to earn a #3 seed for the playoffs. Othello Hunter played in a total of 21 games in the Ukrainian Superleague (9 regular season games & 12 playoff games). In those games he averaged 12 points & 7 rebs in 24 minutes per game..his season high in Ukraine was a 24 point performance in the regular season finale on April 12, 2012. Azovmash advanced all the way to the league finals, but they eventually defeated in the last series.

Related Fact - Fellow Buckeye Scoonie Penn competed in Ukraine during the 2008/2009 season with BC Kiyv.

2013 Recap - (Israel) Brittany Johnson & Elitzur Ramla Shocked Macabbi Ashdod in Game 5 to Become League Champions!

(Former Ohio State Buckeye Brittany Johnson - 2nd from the right - and club Elitzur Ramla celebrate their game 5 win and finals championship - 4.25.2013 - Ashdod, Israel)

2012/2013 Isreali Women Finals - (Brittany Johnson became one of three former Ohio State Buckeyes to win a League Championship in the 2012/2013 season when Elitzur Ramla shocked favorite Maccabi Ashdod in the final series of the Israeli League Playoffs)

4.8.2013 - Elitzur Ramla 75 at vs Maccabi Ashdod 72 (Finals Game One)
- Brittany Johnson: 5 points, 4 rebounds, 13 mins

4.11.2013  Elitzur Ramla 62 vs Maccabi Ashdod 76 (Finals Game Two)
- Brittany Johnson: 12 points, 4 three point makes, 13 mins

4.25.2013 Elitzur Ramla 78 at Maccabi Ashdod 70 (Finales Game Five - Ramla Wins Championship!)
- Brittany Johnson: 4 points, 3 steals, 1 assist in 14 minutes

Path To A Title - Brittany Johnson joined Israeli League contender Elitzur Ramla in January 2013 after spending the first half of her second professional stint in Greece. This mid season transfer marked a significant change in Johnson's early pro career.

As you may recall, Brittany Johnson starred on club Panionios in her 2011/2012 rookie season as one of Greece's top overall players. (Averaged 21 points a game, thirteen 20 points or more games). She would ride the momentum from her overseas run with Panionios by earning a camp invite from the WNBA's Atlanta Dream, playing in one WNBA pre-season game.

Johnson returned to Greece for 2012/2013 with a club called Terpsithea (Avg: 17 points & 32 mins in 9 games). After two months in Greece and the subsequent club switch, Brittany's basketball role changed from being a primary scorer to more of a support/reserve situation for a league contender with other established talents like Allison Hightower and Tamara James. Ramla was the most complete team that Johnson had played with in that point of her young career.

Ramla vs Ashdod - Elitzur Ramla finished the regular season with a 13-6 record (Johnson played in 9 of those games). After dispatching Ramat Hasheron in the semi-finals of the playoffs, Ramla met up with league favorite Maccabi Ashdod..a squad that entered the post-season with perfect 19-0 record. Ashdod featured young WNBA star Danielle Adams & veterans Charde Houston, Ashley Shields.

The results of game one sent shock-waves throughout Israel as Ramla ended Ashdod's undefeated streak with an almost improbable 75-72 Game 1 upset. Nothing sets the tone in a finals series like handing a team its first loss of the season on their own home court. And despite falling 2 games to 1 in the series, Ramla refused to be put away by forcing a fifth and final game after a crucial 71-60 game 4 victory...Allison Hightower (pictured left: Hightower and Brittany Johnson cutting the nets) carried the squad with 26 big points.

Championship: Elitzr Ramla's finals series started with a statement win on the road, and it would ultimately end on the same note. Ramla displayed a championship level of fortitude and resistance all series long. They proved to be more than formidable in game one, and every time Ashdod came with a victory or great in game run, Ramla responded with the necessary answers.

The title was there for the taking, and Elitzur Ramla reeled it in with the collective help of five players scoring in double figures. Tamara James (17pts) & Allison Hightower (16pts) led the way in helping Ramala capture the 2013/2014 Israeli League Championship - Game 5 - Final 78-70Brittany Johnson played in all 5 games of her first playoff finals..she scored a series high 12 points in game 2 and contributed 4 points, 1 assist and 3 big steals in game 5.

Buckeye Ballers Blogspot: Back On The Court!

(Image - Ronald Lewis: One of our favorite former Buckeyes to cover over the years)

Game Time : It has been a long time coming, but Buckeye Ballers Blogspot is back and ready to get more buckets! A couple of hardcore Ohio State Basketball heads started this blog in the summer of 2009 in an attempt to follow the professional Buckeyes at home & abroad. We were able to acquire what we can proudly describe as a small following with readers spanning from California all the way to Russia and east Asia, but after two years of posts we stopped blogging in late December.

Several outside factors prevented us from continuing the blog posts such as graduate school for our main writer and the technical loss of the majority of our videos & pictures. Additionally, the December 2011 passing of former Buckeye Brent Darby had a profound affect as we just could not bring ourselves to write about basketball following that (we stopped blogging, but still followed the Buckeyes and would upload videos to BuckeyeBallersTV on occasion).Well, after a few years on IR, we have now returned with a significant amount of new material for our fellow OSU heads.

Going Forward: As you may have noticed, this blog specifically took a keen interest in the Buckeyes playing overseas, and from this point on we will primarily focus on those players outside of the States with the occasional NBA related post. We feel like we have been able to carve out a niche covering the overseas Bucks and definitely want to continue that vibe.

Well....there's so much to cover and recap..wecwill start out with summary style posts regarding some of the bigger stories from the 2012/2013 season and then move along to the current season.

We would like to sincerely thank anyone who has read a post from this blog or watched one of our videos.

Buckeye Ballers - First Team All-November 2011 (Brandie Hoskins is Player of the Month!)

(Image - Romania Fall 2011 - #35 Brandie Hoskins SCM CSS Craiova)

First Team All-November - Brandie Hoskins (Guard/Forward - 5 Years Pro) is the top player of November 2011 after another dominant month of play in Romania. Brandie currently the number one scorer in the league and it doesn't look like she will be relinquishing that title anytime soon. Here's why, in five November games, Hoskins averaged 25.8 ppg and 6 assists. Her best scoring game of the month was a admirable 30 point effort against ICIM Arad, the #2 team in Romania (November 29).
  • Je'Kel Foster - Guard (6) Years Pro (Veteran Je'Kel Foster experienced the most challenging schedule of all the Pro Buckeyes in November. His Munich, Germany based club, FC Bayern, had a crazy stretch that included two tough Eurocup away games in Russia and Croatia and contests in opposition to heavyweights ALBA Berlin and Benetton Treviso at home. Je'Kel was one of Bayern's top leaders (13ppg) in that difficult series of games. He continues to display that tough brand of basketball we have come to expect. Top moments - Foster dropped 31 points in Artland Nov. 12, led Bayern to their first ever Eurocup victory over Treviso on Nov. 14, and scored the game deciding three pointer versus Fraport on Nov. 12)
  • Othello Hunter - Forward - (4) Years Pro (Othello Hunter had a monster first month of Basketball in China. He is currently the top rebounder in the CBA after five straight dbl-dbl games resulting in super nice averages of 18.4 ppg & 16.2 rpg! The forward from Winston Salem, North Carolina collected a season high 21 rebounds in his regular season debut on 11.19. Hunter also had 27 points (12 fgs including two threes) & 19 rebounds in Shandong's big victory over Wilson Chandler and Guangsha on 11.25. Shandong went 3-2 in the month of November.)
  • Brittany Johnson - Guard - Rookie (First year pro Brittany Johnson, the player of October 2011, picked right up where she left off by scoring 28, 25, and 26 in three November games. Lady Buckeye fans knew Brittany would probably find success from the outside as she is a great shooter, but we have also been very impressed with how adept she has been at getting to the foul line and converting. Johnson is really damaging teams in this area..she earned 31 free throw attempts in those 3 games and made 28 of 31! - 90.3% )
  • George Reese - Forward - (12) Years Pro (G. Reese averaged 14.8 ppg in five November Polish League games. In AZS Koszalin's 109-75 blowout of LKS Lodz..George contributed 24 points, half of which came from the 4 three pointers he hit out of six attempts. AZS Koszalin faced three of the top teams in Poland during November..they are currently ranked #6 in ths standings with a 5-6 record)

Eurocup - FC Bayern Munich Guard Je'Kel Foster Expected to Miss 3-4 Weeks after Ankle Injury in Russia

(Image - Demotix - St. Petersburg, Russia - FC Bayern Munich Guard, #13 Je'Kel Foster fights to gain possession of the ball against Spartak SP - 11.29.2011)

FC Bayern in Russia - German club FC Bayern Munich closed out their unbelievably tough November schedule with perhaps the most difficult game of the season so far, a Eurocup road trip against favored Spartak in St. Petersburg, Russia (11.29). Spartak SP is currently playing three schedules, the Russian Superleague, VTB United League, and the Eurocup Competition (2-0 in Bayern's Eurocup Group G).

Defeating a battle tested Spartak team in St. Petersburg was a daunting challenge for Bayern. So the 75-62 final in favor of Spartak was not much of a surprise, but finding out that Je'Kel Foster only participated for 9 minutes of the contest was. According to reports after the game, the starting two guard for Bayern a severe ankle/foot injury in the 2nd quarter. A writeup (link - injury description) on Foster additionally states he will be out of action for several weeks, and that's a setback for Munich to lose one of their top leaders for most likely the remainder December's games.

Foster's injury in St. Petersburg, Russia was an unfortunate close to what was an awesome month for the native of Natchez, Mississippi. Some of his November highlights include leading Bayern to their first ever Eurocup victory over Italy's Treviso (11.15), hitting the game sealing three pointer on Frankfurt (11.20), and a 31 point performance in Artland (11.12). Get well soon Je'Kel!

In The Game (China) - Buckeye Othello Hunter & Shandong Battle Jim Cleamons' Zhejiang Guangsha Lions With NBA Player Wilson Chandler!

(Screencap - 11.25.2011 - Pregame -National Anthem - left front - Shandong import and former Ohio State Buckeye Othello Hunter - right front - Zhejiang import Wilson Chandler - Shandong Province in East China)

Top Level Talent Overseas - Basketball Never Stops, a 2011 Nike Off-Season/Lockout ad campaign that celebrates a universal love of the game amidst serious labor disputes in the sport's top league, the National Basketball Association. The slogan, Basketball Never Stops, could not be anymore apropos for these late 2011 months of November & December where high level basketball can be found around the world, despite empty NBA arenas. It is disappointing to lose a portion or all of a season's NBA games, but Basketball never stops, a considerable amount of big time NBA talent has opted to played overseas through the duration of the NBA lockout or entire 2011/2012 season leading to unprecedented hype and excitement in the international game (NBA All-Star Deron Williams drops 50 points in a Euro-challenge game, Andrei Kirilenko returns to Moscow to dominate the Euroleague with CSKA..these are unique dream situations for international fans because these players should be in the States under normal circumstances).

Buckeyes in big games - Going into the season, we knew there would be chances to view the overseas Buckeyes compete against some high profile names and there has already been memorable games. In the early season, rookie David Lighty matched up with NBA guys Nicolas Batum and Thabo Sefolosha in Euroleague games, Ron Lewis played against Jordan Farmar and JJ Hickson in Israel, and Jantel Lavender competed against WNBA stars Tina Charles and Diana Taurasi in Turkey. Another former Buckeye, Othello Hunter, is slated to face several current and former NBA players this season as a member of Shandong in the Chinese Basketball Association. Hunter's first real marquee matchup took place on November 25 when Shandong (2-0) hosted Zhejiang Guangsha and NBA player Wilson Chandler.

11.25.2011 - Shandong FB 97 vs Zhejiang Guangsha 89 (CBA Round 3)
- Othello Hunter: 27 points (10-16 2pt fgs, 2-4 3pt fgs), 19 rebounds!
- Alan Anderson: 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals
- Wilson Chandler: 42 points (14-20 2pt fgs, 3-7 3pt fgs), 10 rebounds, 3 steals

(Screencap - Zhejiang Head Coach, Jim Cleamons)

In the Game - American free agents Wilson Chandler, Aaron Brooks, JR Smith, and Kenyon Martin deciding to play in the Chinese Basketball Association has been one of the most discussed topics in regards to the lockout. Not only are these some NBA players hooping in China, but there is also an interesting angle where all of these guys will have to play the whole CBA Regular Season due to the league not allowing escape clauses in the event that the lockout ends. (link)

Wilson Chandler (pictured left: 11.25.2011 - Former New York Knick, played well with the Denver Nuggets this past season - currently an NBA restricted free agent when the lockout ends), signed with the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions back in August of 2011. The head coach of Zhejiang Guangsha is Jim Cleamons, a former Ohio State Buckeye and NBA Champion (as a player & assistant coach). Cleamons just concluded a legendary run as an assistant under Championship Coach Phil Jackson (7 seasons in Chicago, 13 seasons in Los Angeles), this is his first run as a head coach since the late 90's when he served as the head man for the Dallas Mavericks (1996-1997) and Chicago Condors women's ABL team (1998) -( Jim Cleamons - Hoopedia link). This ESPN article notes that Jim Cleamons as the coach of Guangsha was a plus or pro for Wilson Chandler over other situations.

Quote - ESPN's J.A. Andande
"Chandler, who had been in talks with Olimpia Milano in Italy as well, liked the appeal of playing up to three games a week in China, as opposed to one game a week in Italy. He also liked the fact that Jim Cleamons, the former Dallas Mavericks coach who was an assistant on Phil Jackson's championship teams in Chicago and Los Angeles, will be coaching the Lions." (link)
Guangsha's second American import is big man Dwayne Jones, a former Celtic & Cavalier (2006-2008) who has been every where from the D-League to Turkey, China, and Puerto Rico since his stint with Cleveland. Like Shandong, we do not know much about the Chinese Nationals that Coach Cleamons has to work with, but they have opened with a 2-0 start behind Wilson Chandler's 43 in the game one and 28/12 in game two.

So here we go, Shandong vs Guangsha! We love these types of games because it is always exciting to watch our pro Buckeyes playing under the bright lights against high profile competition! Othello Hunter, former Atlanta Hawk and Italian League All-Star, has been nice in his first two regular season games in China. He's accounted for two double-doubles, 11 points with 21 rebounds in game one and 19 points/13 rebounds in the followup, a 3 point OT win over Shanghai.

Video - 'In the Game' - Shandong/Guangsha clips!

- Game Notes -
  • In China, only one American import per team can be on the court in the first half, Jim Cleamons made the obvious choice of starting Wilson Chandler while Shandong elected to open with Hunter who checked Guangsha's big man.
  • Wow, Othello Hunter just looks better and better every season. He's worked on that mid-range to 17/18 foot jumper throughout his pro career, and now he wants to show that he can consistently hit from long range. So with the score at 2-2, Hunter hits back-to-back three pointers! Great way to start this big game..huge pops from the home Shandong crowd!
  • Shandong actually got out to a great 15-2 opening run before Guangsha battled back to within six by the end of the 1st. Hunter had another cool sequence at the 3:57 mark (20-8 score) when he blocked a shot and then hit a short jumper over Chandler at the other end, prompting Coach Cleamons to call a timeout.
  • Hunter and Chandler did match up occasionally. Hunter on defensive p&r switches, and Chandler when Guangsha would go small. Early in the 2nd quarter, Othello hits the Denver Nugget with a fadeway j in the post! But Chandler responds with a step back jumper of his own and a long three.
  • Both Hunter and former Michigan State standout Alan Anderson were on the floor together in the 3rd. The American tandem provided the play of the game at the 8:56 mark..Anderson intercepted a poor outlet pass to create a 2 on 1 with Othello who finished with the two handed slam! Shandong went back up by ten at that point (58-48).
  • Man, Wilson Chandler is near unstoppable in this setting. The talented wing can get where ever he wants on the court, and he's hitting everything from acrobatic layups to fadeways and long threes. He's going to have to have several big scoring nights for Cleamons because Guangsha's other import, Dwayne Jones, is more of a defender, rebounding type. By the way, Chandler, like many imports look huge in China..Couldn't imagine how Dwight Howard would look..lol..There's a lot of tall guys there, but the athletes here in the States are tall and big and strong and fast...those guys aren't as plentiful in China, although the country is starting to develop that archetype.
  • Fourth quarter..both teams trading baskets. It's been close since late the 3rd when Guangsha was able to cut the game long deficit to single digits..Chandler, who is totally carrying his team, hits a jumper of the glass to give Guangsha a 76-72 lead. Alan Anderson nailed a three to bring Shandong within 1, Chandler comes back with another tough jumper, and then Hunter ties the game with a bucket and-1 finish! (78-78)
  • 78-78 score - Wild sequence! Guangsha foils a Shandong fastbreak..they save the ball from going out of bounds, but Othello Hunter ends up getting the ball from a Shandong teammate and finds a waiting Alan Anderson in the corner for three!
  • 81-78 score - Here we see Hunter off the bounce again, the agile PG drives, rebounds his own layup attempts and scores to give Shandong the five point lead.
  • This is so fun to watch..these imports have the green light to go off in these games! Wilson Chandler was superb in carrying Guangsha, ending with 42 total points, but you tell that Shandong had a little too much with the 1-2 punch of Anderson and Hunter..and they got help from some of their guards who hit two late threes which ultimately put the game out of reach for Guangsha after tying it at 87.
  • Statement Play - Under 50 seconds left, the score is 93-87 after the clutch Shandong threes, but Chandler isn't quitting and makes a running jumper. Shandong, with Alan Anderson on the ball, just wants to run some clock and get a decent shot with their next offensive possession. Anderson finds a guard in the corner who attempts a three, Othello Hunter rebounds the miss, gathers himself with a dribble where he gets low on Chandler and rises for the game clincher over Wilson Chandler! (Big pop from the crowd..Hunter is hyped, the Shandong bench is hyped, Anderson points to Hunter and starts flexing.. Hunter finished with his best game yet in China, 27 points, 19 rebounds!)

Web - Byron Mullens Played Pick-Up Basketball at Ohio Prison Facility During Off-Season

(Byron James Mullens)

Web - Article - ESPN - Basketball Within Prison Borders (contains picture and video)

Pro Basketball players have gone far and wide to get some good competition during the NBA Lockout off-season. Aaron Brooks, Wilson Chandler, and J.R Smith went to China, Kevin Durant played at Rucker Park in New York, Deron Williams went to Turkey, and Byron Mullens went to Prison. Prison?!?

ESPN.com's Anna Katherine Clemmons writes 'Basketball Within Prison Borders', an interesting feature story about former Buckeye Byron Mullens playing basketball with and against inmates at an Ohio Correctional facility.

Excerpt-
"After the Thunder's playoff run ended last May, Mullens began offseason workouts with a trainer and played pickup games at Ohio State University, where he played for one season before going pro in 2009. But after talking this spring with friend Jeff Lisath, the assistant warden at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe, Ohio, Mullens decided to play inside prison walls once again.

"I played ball at some places for juvenile kids when I was in high school and I kinda wanted to get back into it," Mullens said." (link)

Gametime - The ABA expansion Lima Explosion defeated the Gem City Hall of Famers by a score 115-76 in the 2011/2012 season opener. Ohio Northern product Kyle Meyer led Lima with 21 points followed closely by former Mr. Ohio Basketball and Ohio State Buckeye Jamar Butler and his 19 points.

The game was originally scheduled to take place in Dayton, home of Gem City Hall of Famers, but they failed to secure a venue in adequate time for the contest. Working on short notice, organizers planned the event to be played in Lima at Lima Catholic Central HS, giving local fans a chance to see their team in the club's first ever game (The Explosion's regular home venue is Elida Fieldhouse in Lima).
