NBA D-League: Harris Set For 2nd Stint in Erie, Mullens Assigned to Tulsa

The 2009/2010 NBA Developmental League season will have two former Ohio State Buckeye participants.

On November 18th the Erie Bayhawks made their final training camp roster cut before pre-season, trimming the D-league squad down to 12 players. As expected, the Bayhawks top returning shooter, Ivan Harris is among the final 12 to make the pre-season roster. The Bayhawks open the season at Fort Wayne on Friday November 27th.

Meanwhile in the Southwest, the Oklahoma City Thunder have recently assigned rookie Byron Mullens to their D-League affiliate, the Tulsa 66ers. Mullens entered the fall Thunder camp as a developing young big man looking to grab some rotation minutes. However, Oklahoma city knows Byron still has a ways to go before he can consistently contribute productive minutes for the improving NBA franchise. Byron's first D-league assignment will be important as this is an opportunity for him to improve his game by logging considerable game minutes compared to just practicing with the Thunder. B3 will be following young Byron's progress throughout the D-League season. Tulsa opens their season with a home date against the Utah Flash on Friday November the 27th.

The End of An Era

(Detrioit Shock 1998-2009)
(Cheryl Ford & Katie Smith pose with President Obama)

Last month many in the basketball community were hit with a collective jolt (no pun intended) with the news of the WNBA's Detroit Shock's relocation to Tulsa Oklahoma, a new expansion city. Several WBNA franchises have grown accustomed to swirling rumors about financial struggles & ownership change. Yet, it is still a surprise when it becomes official that one of the league's most successful franchises is relocating. The Detroit Shock first debuted in 1998 as one of the WNBA's initial expansion teams. Led by familiar Detroit basketball personalities Bill Laimbeer & Rick Mahorn, the Shock would win 3 WNBA titles and become one of the league's most popular and recognizable franchises.

Since this is indeed the end of the Detroit Shock, we would be remiss not to salute one of their best all time players, former Buckeye & future Hall Of Famer Katie Smith.

Katie Smith arrived in Detroit via a trade in 2005 following a great run with the Minnesota Lynx. She joined a franchise that was already used to winning as the Shock captured their first WNBA title two years earlier in 2003. The 2006 season would prove to be another special year as Smith helped Detroit win their 2nd league championship over the Sacramento Monarchs.

In the year 2008, Smith had perhaps her finest year in basketball by winning her 2nd WNBA title with the Detroit Shock, as well as a gold medal in the Olympic Games in China. Smith earned the WNBA Finals MVP award for her efforts in a 3 games to zero sweep of the San Antonio Silver Stars.

(Smith speaks to a group of elementary school students)

It is thought that a women's franchise will be able to fare much better in a college type of market such as Tulsa, Oklahoma as opposed to an area like Detroit where you have multiple pro sports teams. The former Shock team will remain intact for now, but the team name & colors will be changed. As of now Katie Smith is still a member of the Tulsa franchise roster. The former Ohio State guard was forced to miss the Shock's last play off series in the 2009 season due to a back injury. There is currently no word on her playing status for next year, but Smith does decide to play..then you already know who will be the first fan favorite in the history of Tulsa WNBA team. -B3-

Dayton's Cook Gets Back On Track

This month has been anything but a November to Remember for Daequan Cook. The three year shooting guard out of Dunbar aggravated his shoulder during the season opener against the New York Knicks, a game in which Cook scored 14 points. He tried to give it a go for the next game at Indiana, but was not effective. After two weeks off, Cook made his return on Nov 12th vs the Cavaliers, head coach Eric Spoelstra decided to ease #14 back into the lineup by giving him only 7 minutes of spot duty.

He would receive more playing time in the form of 27 minutes in the next contest versus New Jersey, but Cook, still adjusting to playing big minutes again, only went 1-6 from the field for two points. However, that adjustment turned into full fledged comfort against the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 17th. Daequan Cook scored a season high 17 points. He hit 4 of 9 trey balls, most of his damage occurred during a failed Heat comeback attempt. 14 of his 17 points were in the 4th quarter.

Cook's offense is always a welcome addition to the Heat, who can use a spark off the bench to spell Dwayne Wade. The defensive emergence of Dorrell Wright allows Spoelstra the flexibility to sometimes slide Cook to the sf position, allowing Wright to play along side either Wade or Chalmers at the two guard.

More international updates, and videos coming soon. :)

Butler & Larissa Capture First Victory

(Butler has big time range)

Former Ohio State guard Jamar Butler plays for a brand new club called Olympia Larissa of the Greek A1 League. Before the season, there was a bit of confusion as to which league Larissa would play in. It was assumed the late organization of the team would not have them ready for the A1 league, but they are indeed playing in Greece's top basketball division.

The good news about Larissa playing in the A1 is that Jamar will get to test his game in a consensus top 5/top 6 six domestic league in Europe. These tests will include games against two of the best teams in Europe in Panathinaikos & Olympiacos. The bad news is that his new expansion team may be on the wrong end of some beatings. Such was the case for the first two games of the season, an opening 83-48 loss to defending Euroleague Champion Panathinaikos or 'PAO' on October 25th, then a 108-61 L to llysiakos on October 31st. Yet, Larrisa's fortunes would change on November 7th with their first ever victory, a tight 70-68 W over Trikalla. Jamar Butler had 13 points and 2 assists in 34 minutes. His point total of 13 made this his 2nd best game in his early professional career.

The cerebral sharp shooter out of Lima, Ohio had short stints in Turkey & Italy for his rookie pro season.

And with that, Greg Oden Is Officially In The Building

The clock struck 12:00 AM, back in the Midwest, the new day of November 7th, 2009 had arrived. Yet unknown to many fans in Indianapolis & Columbus, a new NBA force was arriving around that same time in the Pacific Northwest. This emerging NBA force stands at 7ft tall, weighs around 270..his name is Greg Oden. On this night vs Tim Duncan & the San Antonio Spurs, Greg Oden would officially announce his arrival to the NBA and its fans.

From the jump you could tell this night was in possession of something special in the air. The November 6th game vs the Spurs was officially tabbed as 'Rip City' night to honor longtime Portland broadcaster Bill Schonely, who coined that phrase which describes the home of the Blazers. The players completed the ceremony by sporting a throwback rip city jersey, and after that the only thing left to do was to perform, and center Greg Oden would do just that.

But as with any accomplishments, it did not come without any adversity or obstacles. On the other side of the tip off stood future hall of famer Tim Duncan. And from the start both teams made a concerted effort to the let the two big men go at each other. The crowd would go eerily quiet every time Oden & Duncan matched up with each other to see if the former Ohio State big man could hold his own.

In the very first possession Oden successfully contested a driving layup attempt by Richard Jefferson. The next go around on defense was the first isolation with Duncan, Oden moved his feet and forced Duncan to throw a bad pass for a turnover. Duncan smartened up next time and able to hit one of his trademark midrange Js off the glass over Oden. Greg's first offensive move featured a hook shot over Duncan that just barely rimmed out. #52 of Portland would come back with a surprising face up jump shot that got the bounce. Oden 2 points, Duncan 2 points..but Timmy won this round. Why? Because in 4 minutes the crafty veteran was able to lower his shoulder and draw two fouls on Oden, sending him to the bench. At this point in the game, it kind of seemed like the the same ole' story...a talented big man who just can not find a way to stay on the floor..that story would change in the middle of the book..

Up 41-29, Portland head coach Nate McMillan decided to insert Oden back into the game at the 3:52 mark of the 2nd quarter. Now it it arguable that this move wasn't really needed from Portland perspective, they had a decent lead, and Duncan is consciously looking to keep Oden in foul trouble. Doing so meant that Greg would have to play smart, but at the same be a force. The coach made the move, and Oden responded. He re-entered the game, and immediately hit a right handed hook shot over Duncan. Two possessions later he would hit yet another unblockable hook shot over Tim Duncan. These two field goals would set the stag for a memorable 2nd half performance.

Simply stated, Greg Oden owned the 2nd half. Yes he had a lot of help from his rising Blazers, but I saw vintage Oden that night. Suddenly the fouls did not matter much, he was not thinking about that, he was thinking about dominating. He contested almost every shot in the paint, hedged screens , contested shots from perimeter off switches, blocked shots, beasted on the boards, and yes..continued to score! At the 7 minute mark of the 3rd quarter, Oden bullied Duncan with a power move for an inside layup, at the 7:40 mark of the 4th, he sent Duncan's weak ish back, at the 4:30 mark he altered another Duncan shot and snagged the subsequent rebound, the next possession he caught a pass from Brandon Roy for an easy layup, and with just over a minute to play, with San Antonio looking to get back in it, Oden sent back Mano Ginobli's weak ish. In the end Greg Oden would finish with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks, and a great ovation from the Portland faithful.

On November 6th, 2009..November 7th on the east coast, Greg Oden played with passion, fire, intensity, he simply let his talent take over. On this night Greg Oden officially arrived.

The NBA D-League Draft was held last night. Teams are now looking to fill out rosters at various training camps in the upcoming weeks. The Erie Bayhawks have recently released a preliminary training camp roster. According to the Bayhawks webpage, Ivan Harris is among four players who will return to training camp in hopes of making the roster.

One would have to think that the microwave as a great chance to stick with Erie again. Ivan started every game for the Bayhawks in their inaugural season last year. He was the sixth best three point shooter in the entire D-League last season, finishing with 43% from long range, best on the Bayhawks, good luck Ivan!
