Contrary to Mid August Reports, Terence Dials will not play for French Club JL Bourg

(Terence Dials France Circa 2008/2009)

The Mid August agreement between Former Big Ten Conference MVP Terence Dials (pictured to the left - China May 2010) and LNB (Pro B) club JL Bourg-en-Bresse has evidently fell through. (Bourg's Version of the story)

The signing was announced on August 11 shortly after Dial's run in the Chinese NBL. What we gather from the article is Bourg wanted Dials immediately after the NBL Season (it says negotiations were in late July, his last playoff game in China was on August 10) We do not know why it did not work out, but lets see..play in China from late May to August 10..and then fly to France a week later in preparation for the Fall season?..We think most would opt for a longer break in between or say no thanks all together.

Terence began last season in Germany with Paderborn Baskets (11 games) before moving to Switzerland in early February for a quick cup of coffee with BBC Nyon (6 games). And just when it looked like his 2009/2010 season would be somewhat incomplete, the throwback post player traveled to China around May in preparation for the 2010 NBL season which began in June.

TD was one of the NBL's best players this past season as a member of Western Liaoning. He averaged 21 points & 11 rebounds in twenty games including a season high 37 point performance on June 16! Liaoning's season came to end on August 10 in the NBL quarterfinals at the hands of Guangzhou.

Schedule Lowdown - NBA Early Fall 2010

('The Kid' Evan Turner)

(Working post/list of interesting & important pre & early season games- International post after this)

Who says Fall belongs to the gridiron? Hardcore hoops heads can currently watch the 2010 FIBA World Championships which leads right into preseason professional basketball around the world. September & October will have several interesting story lines involving Buckeye ball players.

The eyes of the Scarlett & Gray nation will be watching as #2nd overall Draft Pick Evan Turner enters the bright lights of the National Basketball Association as a Philadelphia 76er. While Evan holds it down in the East, two former Buckeyes Daequan Cook & Byron Mullens will be looking to make some pre-season noise on one of the West's rising teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The return of Greg Oden is of course prevalent in our thoughts as well as how Mike Conley Jr. & Memphis will start out of the gates (future playoff team?)

-Preseason-

The Villain of October - Ohio State sensation Evan Turner and the Philadelphia 76ers will play seven preseason games from October 6 to October 20. The Eastern Conference exclusive stretch includes home & aways with Boston & New Jersey along with a road game up north vs Toronto & his first return to the OH in Cincinnati vs the Cavaliers. (three back to backs)
  • 10.5.2010 - New Jersey at Philadelphia (Roanoke, Virginia - 7:00PM - Evan Turner's first NBA Preseason Game)
  • 10.6.2010 - Philadelphia @ Boston Verizon (Wireless Arena, Manchester, NH 7:30PM)
  • 10.9.2010 - Philadelphia @ New Jersey (Prudential Center, Newark, NJ 1:00PM)

More Spicy Pre-Season Games - Last Pre-season Kosta Koufos was able to play in England & Spain with the Utah Jazz as part of the NBA Europe Live Tour. It looks like the Canton big man will be on another pre-season European trip as his new squad Minnesota is slated to play in London & Paris (10/4 & 10/6). Back home in the states, Mike Conley Jr. & the Memphis Grizzlies will host Spanish Euroleague club Caja Laboral on October 14. That same day will have another Euroleague/NBA clash when Russian power CSKA Moscow plays Daequan Cook, Byron Mullens, & the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Cook might have a chance to get at his old team on October 8 in Kansas City when the Thunder take on the new look Miami Heat. The Clippers & Trailblazers play their opening pre-season game on October 5 which creates the possible scenario of two former #1 overall picks on the court if Greg Oden & Blake Griffin get the clearances to play.
  • 10.4.2010 - LA Lakers @ Minnesota (The O2 Arena, London, England 8:00PM)
  • 10.5.2010 - LA Clippers @ Portland (Rose Garden, Portland, OR 7:00PM)

Buckeye Jamar Butler Will Play in the German Bundelisga with Eisbären Bremerhaven!

('The Iceman' Jamar Butler)

Former Mr. Ohio Basketball & Buckeye Iron Man (2004-2008) Jamar Butler will take his talents to the German Bundesliga for his third season of professional basketball. Club Eisbaren Bremerhaven announced the news via their web page on August 16, 2010.

Butler (pictured left with NBA coach Mike Dunleavy - Clippers Summer League 2009) has already played in four countries in just two seasons.

Pro Timeline

In our opinions the German League is a good look for Jamar and just another stop in a career that is on an upward trend. He bounced back from his rookie pro season with solid work in Greece (top 5 European league) before rounding the season out in the Bosnian League.

Butler was able to get some of that experience lost in his first season (only played a total of 11 official games) back during his 18 game stint with Larissa in Greece; he then participated in his first european post-season tournament with Igokea in the Bosnian Playoffs later that season.

The iceman will now take his cerebral game to the German Bundesliga, a very competitive league with lots of recognizable European & American talent. Jamar will be the lead guard for Bremerhaven, one of the league's better squads down the stretch last season (made it the semis of the playoffs).

More video coverage of Butler's games? - That is what we are thinking with Jamar heading to top 10 German League team. Larissa was a newly promoted team to the Greek League last season. It was hard to get video of their games aside from the contests vs the big teams like Olympiacos & PAO (as you will see in the vid)..and the Bosnian is so obscure that there were no clips to speak of. With Bremerhaven Butler should be a lot more visible than last season (German league gets decent to good coverage..plus he's on a good squad)

Buckeyes In Germany - Deutschland has been a frequent destination for OSU hoopsters in the last decade. Je'Kel Foster has played three of his four pro seasons in the Bundesliga; he appeared in two All-Star games & won the German Title in 2009 with Oldenburg. Foster's opponent in the 09 finals was Telekom Baskets Bonn which included former Buckeye Center Ken Johnson. KJ played with Frankfurt in the 2007/2008 season before moving to Bonn (2008/2009). Johnson's former Ohio State teammate George Reese was with the Skyliners of Frankfurt just one season earlier (2006/2007) before his super stint in Poland with AZS Koszalin.

2010 Swiss Champion Brian Brown has also put in major work in Germany. He first played there in 2002/2003 for Baskets Bonn. After a season in the NBDL Brown returned to the Bundesliga for the next two seasons (2004-2006) with TBB Trier. The NY baller then got some buckets in France for a year before playing for Jamar's new team Bremerhaven in 2007/2008.

Furthermore, Brian started the 2008/2009 season with Polish club Anwil, but after five games he left and returned to TBB Trier where he played until January 2010 (Moved to the Lugano Tigers of Switzerland where he won a league title.) If the pattern of the last four seasons holds true Brown should be starting this season in Germany :) -- He appeared in two Germany League All-Star games and won the 2006 BBL All-Star MVP Award.

George Reese & Ken Johnson missed a Buckeye reunion in Frankfurt by one season. But that was not the case in late 2009 when Terence Dials signed with Matt Terwilliger's Paderborn Baskets for a brief stint. Twig played with Paderborn in his first two professional seasons (Dials left Paderborn in Jan. 2010)

Another OSU big man Velimir Radinovic played in the BBL last season for a club called MBC. Matt Marinchick currently plays in the German minor leagues with TSVE Bielefeld..Matt has been video documenting his experiences his Germany.

The former Buckeye (2003-2005) walks us through one of his super quick dribble moves..(it's tough!...but he adds the in-game video from Brazil to show how he executed it on the pro stage) Stockman will depart from the United States in early September en route to Mar Del Plata, Argentina in preparation for the 2010/2011 season with Penarol. - StockmanBasketball.com .)

Othello Hunter Will Play For Dinamo Sassari in Italy for 2010/2011! (Plus O's Summer League Mix!)

Hunter to continue career in Europe - Newly promoted Serie A Club Dinamo Basket Sassari (Sassari, Italy) announced the big signing of Buckeye Othello Hunter on August 9th, 2010. Hunter reportedly has an NBA escape which expires on the 18th, but indications are he will play his 2010/2011 season in Sassari (was rumored to have an invite to the Nuggets Camp after his superb Summer League showing).

As Hunter fans, we must say that in our minds he is a league talent (NBA)..he has proven that much..but Othello is one of many great players this summer to go ahead and opt for solid overseas situations over attempting to make an NBA roster later this fall (The European regular seasons start around the same time as the NBA training camp period, so the good to great situations overseas are obviously not as abundant in the Fall as opposed to the Summer)

We say this every year, but the amount of talented players who are playing outside of the NBA is astounding. There is not much of a difference between the bottom guys on most NBA rosters and the better players in a lot of overseas leagues.

What Up Italy - Othello played the second half of last season in Greece for a club called Ilisiakos. The 24 year old went up against some top European clubs like Euroleague runner up Olympiacos, Marousi, and Greek Champion Panathinaikos in his first overseas games ever . And in just nine contests, he caught on to the new style fairly quickly with five double figure scoring games including two double doubles - season high 19 pts vs Kavala -3.27.2010..Hunter has big potential in Europe..duh :)

-Hunter's Pro Timeline-
  • 2008/2009 Rookie Season - Atlanta Hawks
  • 2009/2010 Atlanta Hawks - October to December 2009
  • 2010 Ilisaikos - Greece - February to April 2010
  • 2010 - Dinamo Sassari - Italy
The versatile big will go from the Greek A1 to another premier European League in Italy's tough Serie A (where fellow Buckeye Je'Kel Foster is also slated to play) His new club Dinamo Sassari is looking to make a splash in their first season in the country's top league. Othello will team up with former Cincinnati Bearcat & dunking sensation James 'Flight' White and former Pacer Travis Diener. Dinamo intends to play Hunter at center, the native of North Carolina will rock #5 for next season.

It's going to be fun to watch two of our favs in Othello & Je'Kel play in Italy!

(Hunter - NBA Summer League circa July 2010)

BuckeyeBallersTV Feature Video - Othello Hunter 2010 Summer League Mix

Showing Out in Vegas: Shout out to the Denver Nuggets. They gave Hunter an opportunity to play in the 2010 Las Vegas Summer League, and he did not disappoint. Othello drew rave reviews all week as Denver's first big off the bench. And when former Wisconsin Badger Brian Butch went down with an unfortunate injury, Hunter capitalized and earned even more praise. In 5 games, Othello shot 62% from the field with average of 12 points & 6 rebounds per game.

Hunter is simply an exciting player to watch who gets better and better each year...he's long & athletic, plus he runs the floor really well which leads to highlights. He looks extremely comfortable shooting the jumper and is also nice around the basket. Our favorite play of his this summer has to be the left handed alley from Denver PG Ty Lawson.

News & Notes

(Chris Jent & Lebron James)

- Some quick news items -

-Jent will contine with the Cavs: New Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Byron Scott announced four coaching additions on 7.29.2010. The lone returnee of the group was former Buckeye & current NBA Assistant Coach Chris Jent (1988-1992). Jent wil l return for his second season as an official Cav's Assistant Coach. His personal monitoring of Lebron James' shooting stroke was an integral part in the MVP's development.

There was some speculation that Jent would follow James to Miami. But with the recent announcement coach can kind of separate himself from being known as 'Lebron's Shooting Coach' to being an all around up and coming NBA Assistant Coach.

--Article-- New Jersey Herald - Sparta Legend Jent Prepares for Life After Lebron in Cleveland -- 8.10.2010

-The Road from Player to Coach - As reported earlier in the summer, former Buckeye player Danny Peters, son of of former Buckeye Assistant Coach Dan Peters will join the staff of Sean Miller at Arizona as a Graduate Assistant.

-U Mad Taurasi? --

WNBA hoopster Jessica Davenport will wear a protective mask for the rest of the season as a result of a broken nose at the hands of poor sport Diana Taurasi. In a rematch of last seasons WNBA finals, the Eastern Conference leading Indiana Fever went into Phoenix on August 8th and damaged the Mercury by a score of 102-84.

Taurasi apparently could not handle being humiliated & punked in her own house..3 mins into the 4th quarter, a frustrated Taurasi gave a blatant intentional elbow to a defending Jess Davenport who attempt to reach in (and of course they called Jessica for the foul! you kiddin' me!?) The punk move was allegedly in retaliation for an inadvertent elbow by the Fever's Shavonte Zellous that knocked out Phoenix's Dewanna Bonner.

The WNBA ended up fining Taurasi, but she should have been suspended. The Fever & Mercury play again in Indianapolis on Friday August 13th..that is a guaranteed blowout.
-Wish there was tape of this - Former Buckeyes Brent Darby, Matt Terwilliger, & Shun Jenkins took part in an exhibition game on 8.7.2010 pitting local all-stars vs popular ESPN streetballers as a part of the "Hoops No Harm" Streetball tour. Some of the streetballers included known guys from the And1 Mix-tape tour like AO, Spyda, & Helicipoter.

B3TV Feature Video - Scoonie Penn: Red Empire Elite

(The Great Scoonie Penn)

While we were watching our Buckeyes make a run to the Final Four in the 2006/2007 season, Buckeye great Scoonie Penn was in Europe playing for Greek power Olympiacos. After stints in the Ukraine & Italy, Scoonie returned to the Reds (Olympiacos nickname) in January of 2010 & joined a squad that would make the Euroleague & Greek finals.

If the 2010 season was indeed Penn's last of his career, he went out on the highest possible level outside of the NBA. (3 of his teammates, Josh Childress, Linus Kleiza, & Pat Beverley have all signed NBA contracts for the 2010/2011 season.)

-'Red Empire Elite' - Our tribute to Scoonie's 2nd stint with Olympiacos which includes some of his biggest shots from the Euroleague & Greek playoffs (we are still working on a 2007 Penn Olympiacos Mix -- Go00000 Scoonie!)

Guard Ron Lewis Will Return to Belgium for the 2010/2011 Season!!

(Ron Lewis - Czech Republic - circa October 2009)

Buckeye Ron Lewis will return to the country of Belgium for the 2010 - 2011 season. Club Dexia Mons-Hainaut announced the big time addition on their web page (shoutout to Mons for linking the 'Rise' Video!) August 2nd, 2010.

The Belgian Basketball League (Basketball League Belgium - BLB) is where Lewis' professional career began. After playing in the Las Vegas Summer league in the summer of 2007, Ron went on to play for a club called Spotter Leuven in his rookie pro season (finished as the 3rd leading scorer in the regular season with 17 pts per -- pictures at RonLewisBlog).

-Ron Lewis' time-line

-2007/2008 - Rookie Season - Spotter Leuven Bears - Belgium
-2008/2009 - Ironi Nahariya - Israel
-2009/2010 - CEZ Nymburk - Czech Republic
-2010/2010 - Dexia Mons Hainaut- Belgium

Lewis enters next season coming off a long but satisfying run with the Czech Champions CEZ Nymburk. He played in the Eurocup competition against teams from countries such as Spain, Serbia, Turkey, Germany, Latvia & Italy. In addition to the European competition experience, Ron won his first National Cup and League Championships (Czech League) in his 3rd pro season.

Dexia Mons Hainaut of Mons, Wallonia finished as the sixth place team in the last Belgian regular season (15-17, last qualified team to the playoffs) In recent history they have won the Belgian Cup int he 2006, and were also the 2nd place team in the 2008 EuroChallenge.

If the summer additions are any indication, Mons wants to do a little better than a sixth place finish for 2010/2011. In addition to Ron Lewis, Mons has also added former Vanderbilt standout Shan Foster, Marcus Hatten & Ronell Taylor. And lastly, Xavier University's Justin Cage, who played with Mons last season resigned for next season as well..so it's going to be fun to see these guys mesh together. Ron & Dexia will play in the Eurochallenge qualifiers in the fall!

-Video: Some clips of Lewis in the Czech Finals. 2009/2010 was a special team..could a consecutive championship be in Ron's future?

Isn't it crazy how the pros can reunite former teammates or opponents? Here it is one of the most memorable plays in NCAA history. Justin Cage misses the free throw and Ron Lewis hits the unbelievable three, and now they're teammates!

Coaching the Next Generation (Daequan Cook Vids)

(Daequan Cook - OKC Thunder Youth Camp/late July 2010)

Every now and then we like to make note of the constant prevalence of our Buckeyes in the community. From Lawrence Thunderburke to Katie Smith & Michael Redd, several past & present Ohio State players take the time out of their personal schedules to interact & share knowledge in youth basketball camps and seminars.

Shooting guard Daequan Cook took part in the Oklahoma City Thunder Youth Camp at the Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma City County on July 27th. Cook spoke to the media after the camp in what amounted to a de-facto post trade opening press conference (Video -Interview). Daequan shared his thoughts on fitting in with OKC and desire to expand his individual game. He added that the slower pace of Oklahoma City (in contrast to Miami) will keep him more focused. On being traded, Cook joked that he was traded for Lebron James :) - Daequan flew to Columbus the next day to join Mike Conley Jr. for another youth Basketball camp.
